Behind my home in Tucson is the Agua Caliente trailhead, a jumping off point to about an 8-mile hike that traverses the first of the two hills in this painting.  Most afternoons, these hills get lit up by the late-day sun.  One day the light was just about perfect, and this painting is what resulted.
